2.0.0 Bug Report Thread

Hadn't updated since beta 7, so very impressed with the 2.0, it seemed pretty solid and fast.

One issue i came across last night. I tried creating a user dictionary for the first time using 2 new entries, then edited them to correct a couple of errors in each entry, and all this worked great, I now had a new User Dictionary. However when I went to go back to the standard dictionaries (Oxford, TL, + the free dics) by entering some chinese text, it wouldn't change away from the user dictionary. I tried entering different text, but it just stayed on User Dictionary and saying can't find entry. Eventually I exited and restarted Pleco, but this had no effect. I then went into "Manage Dictionaries" and they had all vanished, only the User Dictionary remained listed in both Chinese and English. I checked on the SD card and all the dictionaries were still there in the Pleco Folder. In the end I did a soft reboot of the PPC and they all came back, albeit in a different order under "Manage Dictionaries". Now everything is back to normal and working.

Very Strange. I'm using a Toshiba e800 wm2003se.

@neilperks - sounds like your SD card disappeared, which is a relatively common WinMo problem. Not sure about 2003, but in WM5/6 you can just quit Pleco, then remove and re-insert the card, then relaunch Pleco.

Thanks Idolise, but the SD card was still visible in other programmes running on the ppc such as explorer (which is how i knew the dictionaries were still on the sd card)and coreplayer. Do you mean that Pleco can lose sight of the SD card, even though its securely inserted and visible to other programmes

I never checked if other programs could see it. It normally happens to me when I pull out and re-insert the card while Pleco is running, which is a bit of a no-no.

I've had the disappearing SD Card once, but it only lost sight of the Pleco Directories on the card, and that even persisted after a reset! Had to remove/insert the SD Card again to get it working.

Thanks for the thoughts on this, I'll try it again at lunchtime and see if I can replicate it. Hopefully it's just an sd glitch.

I tried it creating the User dictionary again and this time it seemed to work flawlessly, so maybe the idea of losing the sd card is correct; what i don't understand is why only Pleco lost the sd card (coincident with creating a User Dictionary) but no other programmes did ? ..and it obviously picked it up again on soft reset (but I haven't removed or inserted the card at all during this process)

Anyway problem seems solved and apart from this had no problems, this really is a brilliant programme and very responsive; looking forward to 3.0

xin - PenP is the problem one here; you'll want to disable that to get handwriting recognition working smoothly. (not sure why it was automatically disabled in 1.0 and not 2.0, have to investigate that) If you just open PenP and uncheck all of the boxes that should be enough to disable it.

neilperks et al - not sure what's going on here; Windows Mobile's SD card drivers are less-than-entirely-stable, but the fact that Pleco's the only program losing access to the card suggests that it's not the drivers' fault. It could, however, simply be that Pleco was the only program running when the card was removed / reinserted; the data files it was using might still be considered "open" even after the card was removed/reinserted, and while Pleco's supposed to close and reopen them in that case there's a chance that might not have worked, in which case the files would remain open / locked / unusable until the device was reset. Anyway, glad to hear it seems to be behaving better now.

Missing search button on Edit Card screen
Device: Palm Treo 680

Modules/Open Flashcards/Manage Flashcard/Add card button. Move the blinking cursor to "Simp:" field, then tap "From Dict" button to open the Edit Card screen. Notice that the search button is shown as blank, actually it's there and works correctly if you tap it. A trivial bug, since I don't need to tap the "Simp:" field to look up a headword in dictionary.

yesterday i had a strange effect of "blank" flashcards. it happened after approx. 2000 reviewed flashcards (over 2 days), when i started a new session, the card showed up completely blank. i stopped the session and started it again, for a short time i saw the headword, then it went blank again. after i answered the card, it was revealed normally (it was like a testing mode with nothing shown). after this i never saw any of the headwords before revealing... even after stopping/starting sessions. after several stop/start, it even did not show all buttons at the bottom, i remember the "reveal" button missing...

after restart of pleco everything normal again, maybe some other program running on the machine was influencing, specifically i had the "ZTA4 Manager" open at the time.

Wow, I love this product. The stroke order and sound features are just wonderful. Sorry to report a crash, though. It has occurred more than once during flash card sessions on both my and my wife's machines. They are Dell Axim X50v's running Windows Mobile 6 Classic. Hitting the reset button on the back was the only way out.

feryl - yeah, looks like that screen's not updating correctly - thanks.

mfcb - probably related to a couple of the other flashcard session stability issues people have mentioned; with that many cards setting it off and it briefly clearing up again afterwords the most likely answer seems like a memory leak somewhere (it would have to be pretty big, like 10K per card, but that's not impossible).

PeterP - thanks! Re the crashing bug, does this happen during any time of session or only with one type (say, only stroke order)?

Mike, I upgraded to 2.00 from the last beta 8 by copying the windows mobile 6 version of pleco 2.0.0's pleco.exe over the previous exe in the pleco subdirectory of program files on my ASUS P750 from my Vista Lenovo notebook. I also copied over the new flashcard files from the ADD ON page as you suggested in the Activation post. Everything was ok till I tried to Open Flashcards, when I got a message:

Flashcard Failure
Sorry, the flashcard session failed to initialize correctly--please exit Pleco, soft reset (reboot) your handheld and try again.

I rebooted and got back the same message, so I downloaded the zip file again from your link in the Activation post, extracted the appropriate pleco.exe again and replaced the previous exe on my ASUS handheld. I got back the same error message.

Are there some other files that need to be copied over as well (perhaps a new version of the dll)?

I have just updated my Pleco 1.0 to 2.0 (for Palm, on a Mac). Everything went alright, until I tried to install the extended audio files. I wasn't able to click "change destination", so I tried to hotsync anyway. After a while, the hotsync process froze and I had to unplug the device and push that little reset button on its back, in order to put it back to work.
Now my palm resets automatically everytime I select "Pleco" from the applications menu. It will restart and then tell me "extensions are not loaded because free data storage space on the device is low. Delete application or data then reset the device again (APP 8004)". After clicking ok, it says "The free data storage space on the device is very low. Delete application or Data (APP 8002)". After clicking ok once more, the normal applications menu will appear. If I try to select Pleco again, this process will start over again.
I have selected a button for Pleco - if I press the button instead of selecting it from the applications menu, everything works fine.

Pleco 1.0, which is still installed on the device, is affected too: If I try to launch it via the application menu it'll tell me: "The application cannot be launched because of a system error." However, it will not reset the device automatically then.

From what I understand, there is not enough space on the internal memory (Pleco 1+2 already installed). But how can I save the audio files on my SD-card, if I cannot choose a different destination? And even if I don't want these audio files anymore, how can I get my Plecos back to work?

Help is highly appreciated....What shall I do now, anyone out there who can help me with this??

buckdale - it sounds like the flashcard file has become inaccessible somehow; to avoid accidentally deleting / breaking up people's flashcard files, 2.0 never creates a new one when it sees an existing flashcard file already in place, even when it can't open the existing one.

Have you tried soft resetting (rebooting) your handheld yet? You can do that by removing / replacing the battery. If that doesn't help, exit Pleco completely using the Quit command in the Dict menu, then use File Explorer to move "Pleco Flashcards" from My Documents to another folder (say "Personal") and reopen Pleco.

ka la - start by following the steps under http://www.pleco.com/manual/palminst.html#failedinstall to clean out the remnants of that bad Pleco 2 install. Once you finish doing that, try the install again, but this time, if you can't click on Change Destination, try highlighting a file in the list and see if that enables Change Destination. If it doesn't, remove all of the files from the list, exit the Install Handheld Files screen, HotSync your Palm (make sure NOT to cancel / interrupt it until it finishes), then try the install again and hopefully Change Destination will come up correctly this time. If that doesn't work either, there may be something wrong with your SD card or with your copy of Palm Desktop - try reformatting the card (using the Card Info application on your Palm) and reinstalling Palm Desktop.

I have installed the placo2 update and the keyfile. It now opens to my dictionaries but when trying to use the audio on two syllable words I get a message that says:

"sorry, in the demo version of pleco you can only listen to audio recordings for single syllable words."

I have installed all the audio files including the extra download.

Also under stroke order I get the message:

sorry, but due to licensing restrictions, stroke order diagrams are not currently available in the demo version of Pleco. You can see a sample of what they look like on our website at http://www.pleco.com.

I am not curently in demo version so I don't understand why I am getting these messages.

You probably weren't eligible for a free upgrade to the stroke order and audio components. Are they listed under the 'Purchased Components' heading in your 'My Orders' page? If not, you'll have to purchase them. If they are, that's a bit strange.

Also, which 1.0 bundle did you have? If it was just the basic bundle, then that would explain it. There's a couple of other restrictions on who gets the free upgrade, but I don't recall them off the top of my head.

I realized I had to purchase these files. purchased new bundle:

Installed the new key file. But I still get the same messages that these audio files and stroke order files don't work in demo version.

Not only that but now the only dictionaries that open are ABC and Oxford in Chinese and NWP, Oxford and CT in English

That is odd, might be something wrong with the keyfile - try using the "To Demo" option in the Ordering screen to clear out all keyfile data, then download another keyfile from "My Orders" and see if installing that unlocks everything.
