2.0.0 Bug Report Thread

hi!
#1
I use a Palm TX bought in Mainland China with CJKOS Version 4.6.3., which is also the normal method I use for entering hanzi (instead of the PD hwr-recognition-cause its much faster and more convenient). As CJKOS uses GB Encoding, I also set Pleco's External field encoding to GB-2312. Everythings works fine except entering hanzi in the Manage Flashcards area (eg search for headword). The funny thing is that it not only doesnt work with CJKOS Input, but it also displays only weird characters if I tap on 入 and use Pleco's Character Input. Am I doing something wrong with the settings?
#2
Another small problem occurs with a rare character, namely pou2 抔. CJKOS doesn't recognize this character and when I write the character in Pleco's hanzi input and then press "Recognize", the first result is the correct one, but after pressing "done" the character is somehow not copied into Pleco's input field. I entered pou in Pleco and got the right result (but only in ABC, the character does not exist in Guifan!) and after selecting the character in ABCs result and pressing the "Copy to Input field" button, it also doesn't work.

Mike - Thanks for the reply. Internal memory seems OK (25+MB in Program, 38MB+ in Storage). I'll try to quit Pleco before sync (I use Windows Vista, so no Activesync). Could manually adding .txt files to sd card that I later import be a problem? (i.e. do I need to use Pleco WM Installer each time I add .txt files?)
Thanks again.

In Treo 680, when I use flash card in multiple choice mode and want to use numeric key I have to press the option button twice to turn the key board to numeric mode. I think the numeric mode should be the default for multiple choice flash card.

Moreover, when I use pop-up definition feature, the key board turn back to letter mode and I have to press the option button twice again.

During a flashcard session the card counter on top of the screen always shows one flashcard too much. For example if the list contains 4 cards, when reviewing the first card it will say 1/5. After the fourth (4/5) card the session stops and the result is shown. If the list contains 30 cards the first card will say 1/31 and so on. Doesn't really create any problems for me but still wanted to mention it.

That actually sounds like the 'Skipping over Flashcard' thing mentioned elsewhere (in this thread, I think :)), which is where it decrements the count by one if it hits an invalid flashcard that can't be shown, or something like that. Might be worth going to 'Manage Flashcards/Advanced' and doing a search for 'Invalid' flashcards, just to make sure :).

PeterP - how are you running Windows Mobile 6 on an X50v? If it's a hacked ROM then that might have something to do with this, though I'm not sure why the Reveal button specifically would be so problematic - which fields are hidden before / revealed after you tap on that? (or do you use a lot of different settings)? Is the audio set to auto-play when cards are revealed?

mikeo - that control is missing because you've got the software configured to "Repetition-spaced" card selection; the idea behind that mode is that it calculates which cards need to reviewed based on their scores and last-reviewed times, so it wouldn't really work correctly if you were able to limit the number of cards; cards would either be skipped (causing them to fall farther behind schedule for memorization) or reviewed too early. So if you want to choose the number of cards in a session you should use "Frequency adjust" mode instead.

sinoreen - on #1, it sounds like there's an issue with the Input Field Compatibility implementation for that field - we'll investigate. #2 unfortunately we can't do anything about, because the Input Field can only accommodate characters that CJKOS recognizes (otherwise it wouldn't be able to display them and they'd show up as gibberish) - if we ever get around to adding GBK encoding support, CJKOS can be set to use that instead of GB and that handles a lot more characters than regular GB, but there's not much we can for rare character support right now.

royperrin - the Pleco installer doesn't do anything special when copying over files, so that wouldn't make a difference - the Vista backup sync could certainly have something to do with this, though.

anchan42 - right, it should stay in numeric - we'll take a look, should just be a matter of a quick little system call to tell the keyboard to go into that mode.

TaiwanSwedey - yes, as ipsi says that's probably an incomplete card getting skipped. (starting to think maybe a different interface for that would be best - for example, not lowering the count but including a "skipped cards" field in the end-of-session score summary)

Hi Mike,

I just upgraded to 2.0 last night - and am absolutely impressed with it. Also, the upgrade process is pretty painless. Really like the reader, as well as stroke order and sound. Am just starting to play around with the flashcards.

4 (small) comments - I run on a Treo 650:
a. when I open the pull-down menu and use left and right arrows, there is a little white square in the pull-down menu (it just shortly appears and then disappears).
b. some of my flashcards are in uppercase (pinyin uppercase). In 1.0, the uppercase showed up, but in 2.0, the words turn into lowercase, with the exception of the first letter.
c. I used to map the left, right, up and down arrow for use in a flashcard session to reveal the full card or to go back to the previous card etc... . In the current preferences, I cannot find the commands from the flashcard session to map a key to (preferences\button actions\other button actions - right pull down menu)
d. in a flashcard session, review only, with 'all' enabled, if you advance too quickly to the next card (i.e., before the audio for the previous card has finished), then the audio for the next card does not start.

Best regards,

Piet

i have a palm tx and pronunciation search in Manage FCs doesn't work for most of the words, no matter whether or not I add numbers for tones to pinyin.

Palm Tapcis

I have tried several times to export a large group of cards and it crashes every time, around 60-80 cards into it.

I have the following structure:
Class
T
9 Files under the "T" group, each file with 40-100 words
X
5 Files under the "X" group
Y
10 Files under the "Y" group
Z
14 Files under the "Z" group

Let me know if you want/need my flashcard files.

PietStevens - the little white square in a) is something we've noticed for a long time but haven't managed to figure out yet - annoying little thing but doesn't seem to go away whatever we do. b) is actually deliberate, we normalize the Pinyin to make it easy for us to convert to Zhuyin and other formats. c) those options are actually in the Flashcards panel, d) is unfortunately unavoidable on Palm at least - we'd have to pretty much completely overhaul the audio system to get it to interrupt one sound before it starts playing another, and I'd hate to deal with the likely consequences that would have for stability / reliability / etc.

sinoreen - does changing the search to ~= make a difference?

stephanhodges - we'll look through these files, thanks! The exporter definitely needs some more testing/debugging, didn't get used much during the beta...

Pleco will stop on an inexact search within the first dictionary and not try to find an exact match in another dictionary.

随之 suízhī is an example of this. It stops at my ABC dictionary on a "close" entry, but there is an exact entry in the ADSO dictionary that it doesn't go to. So, now I know that I have to cycle all dictionaries to be sure there isn't an exact match lurking somewhere...

Yeah, I don't think that particular search worked correctly in 1.0 either but it's definitely something that needs to be reworked more - very fussy area of Pleco, though, any big changes need to be double-checked and triple-checked to make sure they don't have unintended consequences.

no, it doesn't. after playing around for a while, i found out that both headword and pronunciation search work fine if Input compatibility mode is disabled. but I, and I guess many other palm users as well, use CJKOS for hanzi Input, and it would be a pain to disable and then enable it again all the time. but with Input compatibility mode enabled, there is this gibberish/ frequent crash - problem. In CJKOS I use Chinese GB as character set, and accordingly, I also set Pleco's external text encoding to GB-2312.

Sounds like IF compatibility is pretty much broken on that screen, then - might be easiest to just take it out (and make it always use our custom field code) but we'll see if we can get to the bottom of the problem first.

I'm a little confused about score files. I thought they would keep separate scores for cards, but I have a new deck which I ran through twice using Hanzi first, then reveal all.

Third time, I switched to a different method/profile, which shows the definition only, and then reveals all second. But, I noticed that all the cards have the scores carrying over from the 1st two runs under the "Hanzi" profile.

Is it possible to keep them separate, or is something just broken?

Profiles and Scorefiles are two different things. Head to 'Advanced Settings', then 'Scoring', and have a look at what scorefile they're using. I imagine they'll be the same? If they're different, then something's broken...

They are different, it's just that I don't always use the best nomenclature. I triple checked that each profile has a separate score file, etc. After the "Advanced" settings page, then you click the "Manage" (to the right of the current scorefile) to see all of them.

Also, I name the score files with the Profile name + the phrase "1st" (meaning which part is scored against) so that I don't start confusing the profile and the scorefile.

Any chance you've tested this on the release version? It did work in an early beta  as I recall.

Definitely weird. I don't recall it happening to me, but then I haven't taken huge advantage of the multiple profiles/scorefiles approach.

They definitely work in our testing, so I'm not sure what the problem is - anyone else had this not work correctly? Can you do a simple test, like creating two new profiles/scorefiles, testing 10 cards with one, switching to the other one, testing 10 cards with that one, then checking statistics to see if they were actually recorded in separate files?

Flashcards; Sound does not work in question-mode
============================================

How to replicate;
1. Open flashcards
2. Advanced Settings -> Modes; check 'Enable audio in all cards', but do not check '(auto-play)'
3. ok
4. New Flashcard Session
5. "Self-scored, Headword", Start Session

Now a SOUND button appears in "question"-mode; but this button does not work. It functions as a button (i.e. changes color when pressed), but does not play any sound.

When the answer has been revealed, the sound works fine.

It would be good to have the sound work in "question"-mode as well, as it would function as an audible hint.
If auto-play is enabled; it is only played when revealed. (WHICH IS A GOOD SIDE-EFFECT).

If this bug is fixed (sound button in question mode), it would be good to still only have auto-play in reveal mode. Please.
