Suggestions / BUGS PlecoDict

KangSir - if i know a card, i don't need to review it anymore. I have several thousand cards in my lists and if i want to review and learn them all, i need to sort out the known cards, so that i can concentrate on the unknown ones. It also keeps the flashcard and user-dict files from getting too big (almost all my vocabulary is made up by custom entries).

Greetings,

jo.

PS: from my experience, moving cards and deleting custom entries during a flashcard session is unproblematic, if you are cautious (of course one should also do frequent backups, just in case). if a card is moved, plecodict will replace it with another card. mostly this doesn't cause any problems. you will get a new card or a card will be repeated. still, this CAN be critical (for example if a list only has a single card and you move it - only logical, because there are no cards to replace it). it can happen that you get a 'dangerous' INVALID-entry card that will cause a crash and possible data loss if moved - and only then. in that case, just exit the session and leave it alone. it shouldn't be there the next time you enter the session. i use a sony clie nx80, don't know if plecodict behaves different on other devices.

sfrrr - thanks for the suggestions. I suppose you're right about the add to flashcards icon, but I'm not sure if it makes sense interface-wise - putting the manage/review commands at the top of that pop-up list is likely to confuse people (or lead to a lot of mistaken choices), and putting them at the bottom would be useless for people with long lists.

Saving sessions would be feasible but not easy to implement; possible for 1.1, but not certain. Autofill is tricky because the card lists aren't sorted - it might work but it would be rather slow. Sample sentences would require some significant changes to the flashcard data format; again, possible but probably not for a while. Making sentences into flashcards is the sort of thing that's likely to be possible with the new Document Reader function we're planning for 2.0.

bryant - thanks! Your version is actually a little simpler than Sandra's, and actually something we offered in the Oxford E&C flashcard system - the ability to select only a portion of a definition to be shown on a flashcard (rather than the whole thing).

Subcategories

Is there a way to use subcategories within a flashcard list? That way I can have 1 text file that I can manage from my PC (to import into PLECO) and be able to categorize words by lesson or even break it down even further into sublessons?

I'd prefer not to create a file per lesson especially when some lessons may only have 10 words. And since the import list function in PLECO seems to require that you manually type in the exact path and filename?

I'd also like to be able to use a range, i.e. lesson 1-10 for flashcard sessions.

You can easily export multiple lists to a single file - just check the boxes next to the lists you want to export in the Export screen and they'll all end up in the same text file. Within that exported file, you can split or concatenate lists simpy by editing the list header lines (the // ones).

But as for ranges and subcategories, I'm afraid those are not possible yet.

Thousands of custom entries? 佩服. How did you have time to do that. This software has only been out a few months.

I had been using Anki before and could import all my vocabulary from there. That makes up about half of my custom vocabulary. The rest was entered afterwards. I mostly enter new words using my PC (i still use the Anki Builder to do that). Then i create pdbs and import them to Plecodict. Now i only have to learn all that stuff...

Cheers,

jo.
