How does a card being 'learned' affect reviews?

I'm trying to figure out what effect a card being learned has on if/when it comes up for review?

My hope is that a learned card continues to appear in my review sets.

Can anyone advise?

Hello larrybills,

your choice of settings determines whether the Learned threshold is observed by the Flashcards package or not. Here's an excerpt from the Pleco Instruction Manual:

"Under “Learned Cards,” Card is learned if configures what criteria Pleco uses to decide whether or not a card is “learned.” This affects a number of different areas - the “Unlearned ratio” option for “Random” card selection above, the count of learned cards in the Statistics screen, the “Cushion unlearned” option in Scoring / Tweak parameters, and, most importantly, the “limit new cards” feature below."

If you would prefer maximum control over which cards you're being tested on, you need to pick a Card Selection mode that doesn't take the cards' score into account, such as the Random mode with both Manage new cards and Limit new cards disabled. That is also my own preferred study mode:

You will then simply have to pick the right categories to study. Fortunately, you can find out for any card when it was last studied in the Card Info screen, and which categories it belongs to, giving you full freedom to choose the right categories to study next.

Of course, study modes are a matter of personal preference, so different settings work best for different people.

Hope this helps,

Shun

Hi Shun,
I appreciate this info. With that said (and maybe I'm slow on the uptake) I'm not sure I understand the conceptual model of 'learned'.

Does a learned card imply that it won't be reviewed again? Or is it simply rather a designation to help people keep track of their own progress?

In effect, I'm simply asking what happens in the system if a card is "learned" and how does it affect reviews.

Let me know if my question doesn't make sense.

Thanks again! :)

Hi larrybills,

I know what you mean. As I understand it, what Pleco does is:
  1. It reads the score saved with each card in the categories you choose for a studying session.
  2. If a card's score is higher than the Learned threshold you set, it treats it as a Learned card, otherwise the card is Unlearned.
So you can think of it as a barrier that will cause cards with a score below it or one above it to belong to a different imaginary category and receive a completely different treatment, if your settings say so. For example, with Random card selection set, you can tell Pleco to keep the number of unlearned cards (i.e. below the threshold) below a certain number, so you would always get a mix of Learned cards and a certain maximum number of unlearned/"new" cards from your chosen category.

The treatment of learned and unlearned cards in the Repetition-spaced system is entirely different again. What one can't say, usually, is that learned cards will forever be excluded from future study sessions regardless of your settings. (because you will probably still wish to repeat them from time to time, just more rarely) I think with that concept in mind, you could check out the manual again to understand the current system in its whole breadth. :) See:

You're welcome! Cheers,

Shun

@mikelove
If you have a moment, can you shed any light on this topic? I've reviewed the instructions manual and it's still not clear to me.

How does having a card 'learned' actually affect it's review time in the system? (I'm using SRS and have not adjusted any parameters.)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sure, I appreciate it. :)

If you like, you can have a look at this earlier thread on the subject. Some things are explained more simply there:

@larrybills:
In Card selection you find the setting:
"Learned Cards: Card is learned if score >= 1000" (or whatever Amount/rule you chose).

Normally a flashcard is treated by Card selection totally independent of the "learned status" of the card:
- it will be reviewed again and again
- you find the number of Cards learned in the Statistics
