How do I go about removing/uninstalling the Unihan add-on dictionary? I've uninstalled applications before but not a file like this. Any help appreciated.

Removing unihan.pdb

Phillip:

You don't mention the OS or model of device you are using. If however, you are on a standard Palm OS device, you should be able to delete the unihan.pdb by taking these steps:

  • From your PDA's application launcher page, pull down the 'App' menu by tapping the menu drop-down icon or by tapping at the upper left corner of your screen.
  • Once in the 'App' menu, select from the list 'Delete'.
  • After you have selected 'Delete' you should be taken to a listing of the items loaded on your device. By default this will likely go to your device internal memory. If you have the unihan.pdb loaded on an SD card, you will need to navigate to that listing from the drop down selection at the top of this page.
  • Once you have located the unihan.pdb, highlight it and select 'Delete' by tapping the button at the bottom of the screen. You will be given a confirmation message to insure you want to delete.

Hopefully that helps.

Hi AJ,

Yes, I'm using a Palm Tungsten T5. Thanks for your help. I had already tried going to the delete applications page and couldn't see the Unihan file. I don't have a card in the expansion slot so everything is on the Palm somewhere. I just had another look following your instructions and the file is still nowhere to be found. Nothing remotely matches its name or size. Is there any other place it could be hiding?

Actually, for individual databases the procedure is a bit more complicated. Go to http://www.nosleep.net/ and download their free FileZ utility - it's a great little program that lets you micromanage the files stored in your Palm's memory. Install it to your Palm and run it, click on the "View and Edit Files" button, open up "Internal" and scroll down to the entry for the Unihan database. Select it, tap on the "FileZ" at the top of the screen and choose "Delete" from the menu - that should delete the file.

We ran out of time to implement a built-in file manager in PlecoDict 1.0, but we're optimistic that we'll be able to include one in the next version.

Phillip -

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused you. I do have FileZ myself and find it quite useful for file management needs.

Mike -

Thanks for correcting my errant advice. I can remove the pdb files directly using the Palm delete utility that I mentioned to Phillip originally. Though I have FileZ, I don't have to use it for that purpose. Maybe that's just a functionality of my LifeDrive, or am I missing something?

It certainly might be a LifeDrive thing, though I think might also have something to do with where the files are located - the Delete screen will let you delete individual files from a storage card (even a built-in one like your LifeDrive's hard drive), but it groups them together when they're in internal memory.

Mike and AJ,

Thanks to both of you for your help. FileZ works like a dream. What a great program. :D
