PlecoDict hangs in flashcards

Hi!

Quite often now something very unpleasant happens:

I am in flashcards - Session and cannot close the window to go back to dictionary again but need to kill the program manually.
First I thought this was a thing coming from my old upgraded installation but now I hardresettet my device and installed a full version and the thing happens again.

My setting is:
-Dell Axim X51V with German Windows Mobile A01 (out since 25th of january) and PlecoDict 1.0 (all dictionaries - commercial and free ones)

It is also possible that "Magic Button" (a free Task Switcher) makes some problems even though the problem was still there when I stoped magic Button.

Thanks for any help!
Daniel

Hmm... so you're in the middle of a flashcard session when this happens? Or are you in the flashcard "New Session" screen? If the former, do you try pressing the Exit button first or do you just tap in the window close button directly? This does sound like a bug, though it's going to be hard to a hard one to find if it happens randomly / intermittently.

I have also had some problems with the flashcard function in Pleco for PPC.

I have an ETEN m600 smartphone with Windows mobile 5.0.

When I am in a flashcard test with many flashcards I sometimes want to take a break. So the smartphone goes into power saving mode after a few seconds. When I turn the power on again, Pleco crashes. After it crashes it forgets the improved ranks of the flashcards from the beginning of the test session.

So if have a flashcard list with 30 flashcard and take a break after 20 flashcards, any improved rankings of the first 20 flashcards will be lost when I turn on the smartphone again and Pleco crashes.

Hi!

No - it is not in the middle of a session but in the "Manage Lists" Screen. I can use the tabs on the bottom and change all settings but I cannot get back to dictionary.

Ailixin - does this always happen when your smartphone automatically turns off in the middle of a flashcard session, or does it only happen intermittently? What about if you turn it off and on again deliberately - does it still crash then? Have you moved the flashcard data file to somewhere other than the My Documents folder? Are you running any 3rd-party system extensions, today plugins, or other such software on your smartphone?

daniu - that narrows it down a bit at least; it sounds like this is related to one of the flashcard settings panels crashing when it closes. The tricky thing is determining which one. Try this: open up Manage Flashcards and then close it immediately. If that doesn't cause a crash, open it up again, choose the Edit Lists tab and then close. If that doesn't work either, repeat this with the Import and then the Export tab. If none of those work, try the Session / Test / Cards / Ranks / Flags tabs. Hopefully one of those will cause this crash to appear and we can then narrow down the problem and try to come up with a resolution.

Hi

No the problem did not occur if I turned off and on the smartphone deliberately.

However I think my problem is due to not enough internal memory in my smartphone. I have found a way around it.

By making sure all other programs are closed before I start a flashcard session Pleco seldom crashes even after the smartphone goes into power saving mode.

In Windows Mobile 5.0 I do this by going into Settings, System, Memory, Running programs, Stop all.

That certainly could explain it, yes - still, it's far from ideal behavior and certainly something we'll investigate for the 1.0.1 update. But I'm glad to hear that you've got a temporary solution anyway. Thanks for the update.

Hi!

OK - here my test results again:

I cannot get the Flashcard Management to crash on purpose - sorry!
I tried everything but it did not crash. I think it is some select box - not a menu tab itsself. Because it only happens when I do some changes. Unfortunately last time it happened I had not recorded what exactly I had been changing

I shall tell you when I find our more.

OK, we'll see if anything else turns up in our testing here. We're hoping to have previews of 1.0.1 for PPC and 1.0.3 for Palm out sometime this week, with the finalized versions hopefully to follow the week after (along with the new website), so if we can't nail this down soon it will probably get punted to 1.0.2.
