Hey Pleco Team,
I wanted to suggest a potential feature that could make Pleco even more convenient for learners who regularly navigate Chinese-language apps. I know that implementing something like this might not be simple, but I believe it could be a valuable addition that would enhance the usability of Pleco’s OCR functionality on mobile devices.
The Idea: A Floating OCR Dictionary for Seamless Reading
Right now, when users come across unfamiliar Chinese text in other mobile apps, they typically:
1. Take a screenshot of the content.
2. Open Pleco and import the screenshot.
3. Use OCR to extract text and look up words.
4. Manually manage screenshots to avoid cluttering their phone storage.
This process, while effective, is somewhat time-consuming and requires switching between apps. My suggestion is an enhancement that would allow real-time OCR interaction on the screen itself, making it much more seamless:
• A floating button (like AssistiveTouch on iPhones) that users can tap when they need a quick lookup.
• Once activated, the interface of the current app would freeze, allowing users to tap directly on words to see definitions without needing to take a screenshot manually.
• When finished, tapping the button again would restore normal interaction, allowing users to continue navigating the app.
Why This Would Be a Game-Changer for Language Learners
1. Instant Lookups – No need to manually take and import screenshots, making it faster and more intuitive.
2. More Natural Reading Experience – Users could browse Chinese apps (WeChat, Xiaohongshu, Douyin, etc.) without constantly switching to a separate dictionary.
3. Efficient for Character-Based Languages – Unlike alphabet-based languages where typing unknown words is easy, Chinese learners often struggle with character input. This would provide instant, tap-based word recognition.
4. No Extra Storage Usage – Screenshots wouldn’t need to be saved, avoiding unnecessary storage accumulation.
Acknowledgment & Feasibility
I understand that implementing this would require significant development effort, but I believe it would add a completely new dimension to how Pleco’s OCR can be used on mobile devices. If this is something that could be considered for the future, I’d love to hear any thoughts on its feasibility.
Thanks for all the great work you do with Pleco—I’ve found it to be an invaluable tool for learning Chinese! Looking forward to any feedback.
