New Installer

We're testing out the new PalmSource Installer system - it's still in development, but even at this stage it appears to do a much better job of automatically installing the right files to the right places than our old automated system.

To install PlecoDict using this system, visit http://www.pleco.com/PlecoDict_Download.html - it uses a (PalmSource-developed) browser plugin, so don't be alarmed if you see an installation message come up.

It doesn't include a file-selection option yet, so it'll install all 4 dictionaries, but it does auto-detect your handheld's resolution, so it will only install the appropriate font files for your handheld.

We're hoping that this plus the SD card version (still coming, really!) will help quell some of the (well-warranted) complaints about the difficulty of installing PlecoDict.

the new installer is much more trouble (for me) than the old one. First of all, I use Mozilla, so I had to change several of my security options to get it to work. That's not the installer's problem but it was really annoying.

Then, not all of the files showed up in the installer and not all went to the correct places. PlecoDict's manual install has always been straightforward for me. This was way too much trouble.

It actually comes in an .exe version too, so perhaps we'd be better off using that; that way nobody has to fiddle around with any browser settings, they can just download and run the .exe.

I'm not sure about the other problem, perhaps it's something LifeDrive-related; we'll take a look and hopefully find a fix.

I agree. The exe would be much easier.

Which somehow reminds me, sequitur though it's not: could one or another of my attempts to use the PalmSource installer have installed a program installer into my internal memory? It isn't an app in ROM and I can't figure out what else it could go with.

Yes, it could definitely have installed the Installer program. Some versions of Palm Desktop install it automatically, too. It should be OK to delete it once the software is installed.

Mike--thanks. And please disregard this same question in the Weird Problems topic. Sorry about that.
