New Fonts for Chinese Simplified?

Is there a way to install alternate fonts for Plecodict on the PPC - specifically, ones that look less computer-y, and more like 'nice handwriting.'? If so, does anyone have suggestions on where one could find these types of fonts, and where they should be installed?

It's certainly possible, just install the font in your Pocket PC's \\Windows\Fonts folder and then select it in the "Characters" section of PlecoDict's Preferences screen.

As for where to find them, just do a Google search for "chinese fonts" and you should find lots of free fonts available for download.

I'm afraid not; Palm OS doesn't have any built-in support for Unicode fonts, which means we've had to implement that support ourselves, and for ease of coding we store fonts in a proprietary format that's very similar to that of our dictionary databases. So there's no way you could just plug in another font file.

Oh well. Consider this a feature request for some post-2.0 release, then: if the desktop app could be made to somehow take a PC font and package it into your Palm font format, that'd be quite swell.

Don't get me wrong, the existing huge font is very nice-looking, but sometimes I want to see how stuff should look when I'm writing it with a pencil instead of a calligraphy brush.

I'm really only interested in customizing the 48- and 96-pixel fonts; the smaller ones are fine as is. But I wouldn't say no if I could install a 192-pixel font or an antialiased one -- big SD cards are cheap these days! :D

Possible, I suppose, but rather tricky thanks to the unusual format - our Palm font files actually draw characters from 3 or 4 different fonts, it's the only way we can get all of the character ranges we need. We might eventually be able to get it working with one of our built-in fonts as a fallback, though; it would use the characters from the font you supplied whenever possible, but when it couldn't find a character in there it would get it from our fonts.

I have several Chinese fonts on my ppc, chosen from the many I have on one of my desktop hard drives. And I too like to see the cursive form for characters--that helps me with learning cao3 shu1. Some of my favorite cursive fonts are: huang cao http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/founder/fz-huang-cao-s09/; http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/hyxi-xing-kai-j/; http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/hyshu-tong-j/
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/urw/hyxing-kai-j/

There are others on that site, but they all cost money. However, if you Google one of those names--or maybe some of the most popular non-cursive typefaces, e.g. fang song or kai ti, you'll find the free font websites.
