More problems with flashcards

I have a Z22 and loaded the PlecoDict Basic Bundle. Everything had been working fine until yesterday. My friend, who also has Pleco, beamed his flashcards onto my Palm. I had about four successful flashcard sessions and on the fifth one my palm stopped responding. I was in the edit function of one of the entries and I couldn't get out of it. Since then, I've done about four soft resets trying to get something to work. My palm works fine until I tap on the Pleco icon and then it turns to a blank screen, quits responding, and the only thing that will stop it is a soft reset. I looked on the files and Pleco is still showing that it's loaded but I can't access it. Any suggestions?

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. Looks like the zip did the trick, it's working fine now. Many thanks...

Greater than 100% correct in flashcards

I've noticed a bug with the flashcards.

I'm using PlecoDict v1.02 for PalmOS on my Treo 600.

I created a custom flashcard as a test using the Chinese characters 1 (yi1) to 10 (shi2).

My flashcard test settings are as follows:
Testing mode: Self scored
Display fields: Fixed
Test: Defn (selected)
Show: Char (selected), PY (selected), Defn (selected)
Extra info: % Correct
Reveal fields separately (selected)
Show sketch box (selected)
taller (selected)
Use large font in definition (selected)
Magnify characters in headword (selected)
Don't record answers (NOT selected)

My flashcard card settings are:
Mode: All cards
Sort by: random (is selected)
NOTHING else is selected in this screen but the screen says:
Limit ranks 1 through 1
Require flags: Flags
Limit to cards reviewed before 12-11-05 9:47

From the main preferences screen (Dict, Preferences), the only thing selected from the Flashcards' setting is "Round rep spacing to nearest day" and "Don't duplicate cards in lists".

After completing this flashcard session a few times (about 6 times), I notice that what is displayed as the % correct in my flashcard screen shows values such as 7158269% for one of the characters (for example).

I press the "I" button in the flashcard test screen and I go into the Info screen for this card (Edit Card) and it shows:
The Rank of the character "Wu3 = five" is 6.
Total shows up as 6/6.
Rank is 6/6.

Any ideas why the % correct is larger than 100%?

I tried to reset it and it goes to 100% but once I go through the flashcard test a few times, the same thing happens where the % correct goes above 100%.

Hmm... this is strange, as I recall this bug was discovered a while ago but was fixed in one of the beta versions. So apparently it's made a comeback. Anyway, we'll add this to the list of things to investigate/fix for the (still "coming soon") 1.0.3 update.

Thanks Mike.

This only happens when I get the correct answer for that flashcard every time and I've gone through that flashcard at least 6 or 7 times. When I get the correct answer on the flashcard and I've only gone through that flashcard about 3 times, the correct answer of 100% will show up.

Using the exact same settings as mentioned above, I've also noticed sometimes that the % correct will show 100% when it shouldn't be 100% but I don't have a concrete example of this. What I do remember is that if I made a few mistakes early on in my flashcard session for a particular flashcard and when I go through the flashcard session a few times again and I get the same flashcard correct a few times in a row without error (about 6), the % correct goes to 100%. It doesn't seem to "remember" that I made some mistakes with that particular flashcard in the past.

As I mentioned, I don't have a concrete example of this and I'm just going by memory (unlike my example of >100%). I will do some more testing/investigating on this and post my results/findings.

Another issue with flashcards

I've noticed something else with the flashcards which mght be a bug while using it intensely.

In my Card Settings for the Flashcard, I've enabled the "Limit ranks:" feature and I've specified 1 in the first value and 2 in the second value.

While going through the flashcards, I am also offered flashcards whose rank is "3". I'm not sure if this only happens if the rank increases from 2 to 3 while I'm still in the session or whether if I start the flashcard session, a card whose rank is 3 is still offered to me as a test.

I'm using the Palm version of PlecoDict v1.0.2 on my Treo 600.

That's most likely happening when the rank increases in mid-session; given the way the flashcard system is designed, it's highly unlikely that there would be a bug that would cause flashcards from outside the "limit ranks" range to be included in a session (or if there was such a bug, it would manifest itself in several other places as well).

Thanks Mike. I did some more testing and you're correct (like usual) :D

Is it possible for the program (in the next release v1.0.3 or a future release) to do a check of the actual rank before displaying the flashcard as opposed to using the values of the rank at the beginning of the flashcard session?

This way, if the rank happens to increase mid-session (or decrease mid-session), it will still "obey" the rules defined by the "limit ranks" range.

Unfortunately this is beyond the scope of what we could do in 1.0.3 - it would require a pretty major rewrite of the flashcard system, of the sort we're planning for the next big update (Pleco 2.0). But we are planning to make this change then.

I've just started re-using the flashcards that I've created since upgrading my PDA from a Treo 600 to my new Treo 650 and I noticed an issue with it (or at least what I think is an issue or maybe I'm not understanding it correctly). I didn't try this on my old Treo 600 before I sold it so I'm not sure if it did the same thing.

When I start a new flashcard session, and I go to Card Settings, for the "Mode", I select "Fixed # of cards: 100". The only other option that is selected is "Limit ranks: 1 through 2"

It seems that once I go through all the flashcards once, the flashcard session finishes. With my settings defined above, isn't the flashcard session supposed to finish when I go through 100 cards? The total number of flashcards that I've selected is around 40 from my list of flashcards and after I go through 40 flashcards, the session ends.

Is this normal?

I'm using the latest PalmOS version of PlecoDict (v1.0.3).

This is normal, yes - since it's not possible to save a particular combination of settings for future use, it seemed best to have this option function simply as a cutoff (a specification of the maximum # of cards you might want to review at a time) rather than letting it also repeat cards - that way, you can go from a list of a few dozen cards to a list of a few thousand and get basically the same behavior without having to muck around in Card Settings.

The best way to get what you're looking for would be to use the "Endless loop" mode and simply end the session after reviewing 100 cards - not quite as convenient as having the session end automatically, but it's the same basic behavior.
