Hi Mike!
Long time. The plecoforums an I go way back to the good old Palm OS days...
I've been testing 4.0 since the beta became available. Well, mostly I've just been using day to day without encountering any problems or generating any valuable feedback. But there's one issue that I've now isolated and that seems worth mentioning here.
Settings>Search Settings>Overall>Monitor split-screen keyboard
I have Pleco running on my iPad next to my Mac Mini and use it to look up Chinese characters/words/definitions while working (I work as a translator). This is where Apple's Universal Clipboard comes in very handy. But in Pleco 4.0, the iPad needs to be in actual split-screen mode for this feature to work, meaning I have to sacrifice a portion of the iPad screen to keep some unrelated app open, otherwise changes in the clipboard content don't get auto-inserted into the search field and I have to manually paste it in. Which is a bit of a waste, to be honest.
Also, the keyboard comes up every time the clipboard content changes. I wish there was an option to keep it closed/minimized unless it's actually needed. It would be great if Pleco could just run as an instant-lookup device next to my Mac. Like an open paper dictionary that automatically just skips to just the right page whenever it detects Chinese characters being copied to the clipboard.
I hope this explains my problem. Pleco is by no means unusable as is. I just hope it could be a bit more optimized for various use cases, like the one I described. Some of the behavior I've mentioned might even be intentional, but I hope there's a way to make things work a bit smoother for language professionals like me.
Please let me know if any clarification is needed.
Still endlessly grateful for this priceless gem of software,
best regards,
jo.
PS:
To be clear: I am not talking about the clipboard reader. That would require an extra tap on the copied text, and scrolling through the various dictionaries I've installed would also be much slower.
