When I'm testing my writing, hitting the "show" hard button (which I have mapped to the center nav button on my Treo 650) erases the pen input area.
If I hit the reveal button on the screen, the input area isn't erased, but I've gotten in the habit of using the hard buttons from all the time I spend testing myself on definitions or pronunciation. It would be nice if the behavior of the hard button was consistent with that of the on-screen control.
