iOS Input Method for Stroke Characters

I'm trying to create customflash cards for several strokes, e.g., 一 (横), 丿(撇), etc.

I can't figure out how to input the following strokes:

• right-falling stroke (捺)

• dot stroke (点)

• horizontal stroke with a hook at the end (横折)

I have several other stroke characters I want to memorize but hopefully there's an easy way to enter characters for all the standard strokes.

Thank you

Not aware of any easy way, but if you find a Wikipedia article or other guide on the subject they might have characters for all of the strokes in that which you can copy-and-paste. Otherwise all I can suggest is that you wait until our sometime-in-2013 flashcard update that adds embedded image support.

I posted this question to

http://groups.google.com/group/chinesemac

Below is the reply I received. This approach works for some strokes, e.g., 点, but not others, e.g., 捺, 横折钩.

I was able to enter the strokes you mentioned by using Pleco's radical input method.

1. Go to the dictionary
2. Tap the search area
3. Tap the Rad input method (instead of HWR or Key)
4. You may need to tap the ZY button on the bottom right show the radicals by number of strokes.
5. Tap your stroke (probably in the one stroke radicals). That stroke will appear in the bottom left.
6. Tap done and it will bring up the dictionary card.

If you need more help, try asking at the Pleco forum.

Apparently Unicode has already set aside blocks for CJK Strokes
In the range: 31C0–31EF

http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U31C0.pdf

Unfortunately, none of the iOS fonts installed by Apple contain glyphs in this block.

I'm told that developers—but not users—can add fonts to iOS by bundling them into their apps.

Questions:

1. Does Pleco already have bundled fonts with glyphs in the range 31C0–31EF?

2. If not, would you consider bundling such a font into Pleco?

Here is a list of fonts with glyphs in the block designated for CJK Strokes, 31C0–31EF:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode ... upport.htm

See, for example:

Thank you for your consideration.

Not at the moment, no.

That's tricky for download size reasons - really a better bet would be to wait for us to support embedded images in flashcards (which we definitely plan on doing) and then create them from those. Though I still think your quest for a stroke type review might be better served by a general-purpose flashcard app that already supports those, or by an app specifically designed to teach you the names of strokes.
