I just watched my user dict get corrupted--before my very...

eyes. (My very blue eyes? what?)

Mike--I said I was going to give up on making and updating a user dict until PD2, but I got complacent. Everything went fine for a few weeks. However, today I entered a, what, 15 word sentence. PD froze, finally closed, sort of, then my Axim x51v slowed to -10mph and forced me to do a soft reset. The first time, I relaunched PD, no definitions showed in the standard dictionaries (ABC, Adso, etc) and all of my user dict definitions were INVALID. Closed PD, waited a few seconds, opened PD again, and my standard dictionaries had all of their definitions (phew) but my two (that's another story we've given up on) user dicts are still filled only with INVALIDS.

So, if I'm dumb enough to try to resurrect those DBs, what is it I need to do?

No, I take that back. Neither you nor I have enough time to deal with this. I was stupid to try a user.db again.

So, therefore, this is just an FYI. Man, I can't wait for pd 2.

Thanks for the FYI. Are you completely sure that your Axim isn't suffering from some sort of mystical curse? Were there any pentagrams or other such symbols on the outside of the shipping box from Dell? :D

Speaking more seriously, do you have some idea about what other applications might have been running in the background when this crash occurred? I agree that it's probably best if you hold off on making user DBs until 2.0 - if you really feel the need to add extra entries then you can do so with MakePlecoDict, but given the number of problems you're having (which I can assure anyone else reading this are quite atypical - it's been quite a while since we got a report of user DB corruption from anyone other than sfrrr) I don't think it's worth the risk with the built-in system.

For forum members other than Mike Love and me, a little explanation. My job is to spend every day testing new and old software, including that for the Palm and the PPC. I immediately install the ones that don't work at all, but bad programs sometimes leave orts. I often keep the useful programs running for a while, even if they're betas.

Mike--I was playing one of three games while I was using PlecoDict to define words I heard on a DVD. They were Mobile Kakuro by mastersoft (a public beta); Griddler from Davidsoft (latest version); and Can't Stop Solitaire's East Haven game (from Paragon software at penreader.com). The problem is that I wasn't running any of these when I had the other user db meltdowns.

I rarely keep something running in the background (unless, accidentally, it's ActiveSync).

Or, it could have been MortPlayer or GSPlayer (media players). In fact, it probably was GS Player, although it coulda been oh I don't know.

Do a hard reset. Reinstall one application at a time and test.

Or perhaps get your boss to buy you a separate PDA for testing unreliable new apps.

Gato--I've done so many hard resets in the last six months that I've become very tolerant of malfunctioning programs if the problems are relatively minor.

And as for asking my boss for any equipment, suffice it to say that the president of our company is an accountant.

At the desktops and laptop level, I have several test set-ups. But at the PDA level, I'm on my own.

But thanks,

Sandra
