how to change the definitions for certain flashcards only?

i have multiple categories of flashcards; the default hsk 3.0 flashcards as well as some custom ones from here for learning radicals. the flashcards for the radicals would need a different info than that for the hsk ones but if i changed the info for the flashcards it seems like it will be affectef for all categories. i would also like to create flashcards for grammar but dont want the info to transfer to other categories. i have tried to find info here, but the answer was more than 10 years ago, and i can’t find any updated info about this

Sorry about that. There are two ways to get different definitions:

1) Make duplicate cards; you can import a list again with 'duplicate cards' set to 'allow'.

2) Configure your test (under New Test / Display) to remap cards to a different dictionary when you're doing a radical test.

I'm guessing you got radical flashcards from a specific source? If so then you're want to use option 1; that's also what you'd want to use to bring in grammar flashcards.

duplicate cards to the same categories? i am able to save the same cards to different categories.

for 2) do i need to remap it for every test? for some of the radicals, i want to manually create custom cards. how do i enable it during the test?

1) Sorry, I assumed this was coming from list of flashcards with radical definitions that you imported. If that's not the case and you want to manually edit a bunch of definitions without having it affect other instances of the same word, the best bet would be to export that list of words to a text file and then reimport it with duplicates allowed; you can edit the definitions in the text file or you can edit them on the phone after you reimport.

2) Sorry, again I was assuming here that you had an existing text file with radical definitions - you would import that file to a user dictionary (Settings / Manage Dictionaries) and then configure your radical test to remap cards to that dictionary. Basically use a user dictionary as a way to swap in definitions for the cards during the test.

so i need to make the wordlist into a dictionary first before being able to use it as a flashcard for the test?
