How to add characters as avatar in forum

Many people have their chinese names appearing in their posts -- the FAQ says these are avatars. But I can't find any doc on how to add them. If anyone could point me to the right place to just describe procedure, I'd be grateful.

Those are actually rank badges - they appear once you get to a certain post threshhold. There's no way to add your own avatar at present.
