Guest Posting Disabled

Due to the rapidly growing number of spam postings we're getting, I've had to disable guest posting of messages. You can still view the forums without logging in, but you'll need to log in if you want to post or reply to a message.

Apologies if this inconveniences anyone; registering for the forums is really very easy, and feel free to create a free e-mail account to use with this site if you're worried about giving us your real e-mail address.

good call

Mike--I'm delighted you disabled guest posting. Not only will it eliminate most spam (which has completely disabled Marsware.net's site), but I won't be able to post accidentally without logging in. No more redundant posts about "oops, sorry, that was I."

Mike, I also agree with your decision 100%. Most forum sites already do this. You have nothing to apologize for.

Thanks! Hadn't thought about how this affects sfrrr's frequent issues with guest posting, but yeah, I probably should have done this a while ago...

mike are you concerned about spam bots? You could implement one of those 'type in the number' before submitting thing for guests?....

The spam bots seem to have figured out a way around that, since several of them have successfully managed to register for accounts (which also use a type-in-the-number system). But registering requires you to go through several screens and respond to an e-mail, and most of the spam bots that can do that seem to have a fairly small number of possible usernames (which we've now blocked from registering), so while it won't completely eliminate spam it should get rid of most of it.
