Flashcards: entering characters

I am trying to set up flashcards again after being away for a long time. This is probably a naive question. I have added a test type that shows "definition" and prompts for "reading". What I want is to be able to enter the character/word using the keyboard. However, when I do that it seems that the input is flagged as wrong (at least it is marked with a red question mark) with this error message:

I am using 3.99.1.44.2.

Sorry, if it's prompting for 'reading' why did you enter a character instead of pinyin? "Reading" is asking for the Pinyin / Zhuyin / Jyutping / Yale / etc reading, not for the characters; to have it prompt you for characters you would want to pick 'headword' instead.

I clearly misunderstood what "reading" means. That is helpful, thanks a lot! However, for headword I can only see two options: "headword (snap)" and "headword (freehand)" and from their description neither of those is what I want (keyboard character entry).

Ah, yes, at the moment you can only get that through a custom test type - create one in Settings / Flashcards, set it to 'fill-in-the-blanks' with 'prompt' for 'headword' and you can pick the system keyboard as an input method. (we can certainly consider adding it to the list of built-in options too but we need to see how many people are interested in using it first)

Unfortunately I only see "headword (snap)" and "headword (freehand)" there as well.

For what it is worth, my guess is that many people would be interested in this as typing with your thumbs on the phone is going to be the main Chinese writing mode for most. Personally I find learning handwriting very valuable too, but my impression is that many people don't consider it worth it.

By the way, is there a way to create flashcards that "display" audio (only), and prompt for headword or reading?

Pick "headword (freehand)" and you'll see an option later on to set the input method to 'system keyboard.'

Audio only: we currently only give you an audio only 'show' option when you're with a test type where you would not need any other information to disambiguate homonyms, i.e. a type where you're being prompted for the reading (or tones) and only for that. This is also overridable with a custom test type (with a custom side format that you leave blank).
