Flashcard session for dummies

Hi Mike,

I feel silly asking what for many must sound like a stupid question:

How does one set up a Flashcard session so it simply does not repeat a successful card in the very next session.

Basically, the classic flash card session: one pile for successfully answered cards, another for unsuccessful cards.

I've read your Flashcard help but just haven't been able to figure this out.

I'm not Mike but I don't think that this is possible based on something that I had asked Mike earlier and because of the current way that the flashcard system works. I'm sure that Mike will correct me if I'm wrong.

I was thinking about a possible solution to what you wanted was to have the "Card Settings" Limit ranks 1 through 1 selected. Also, in the "Rank Settings" to select "Advance to next rank after 1 correct in a row" and "Retreat by 1 rank after 1 incorrect in a row". The default rank would be set on "1".

However, this method wouldn't work because the ranks are only evaluated at the beginning of the flashcard session and not during the flashcard session. What this means is that if a flashcard advances or retreats based on your current session, it will still be displayed during the session.

That is exactly how I do it. Initially all the cards are of rank 1. I have it set to "Advance to next rank after 3 correct in a row", so that after I get a card right three times in a row, its rank increase to 1. Since only the cards of rank 1 being reviewed, the ones you know won't show up again once they become rank 2.

Jim's suggestion will work as long as you select "All Cards" mode in Card Settings. Do that, set Rank Settings to advance cards to the next rank after you get them correct once (1 correct answer in a row), and make sure to have Card Settings confine itself to cards in ranks 1 to 1; with those settings selected, once you answer a card correctly it'll move into rank 2 and won't come up again until you expand the ranks in Card Settings to include that rank. This won't work in Fixed # of Cards or Endless Loop mode, because those modes allow cards to come up more than once in a session (leading to the problem Jim mentioned with cards not updating until after the session ends), but in All Cards mode it should work fine.
