Feature Request: Associate pictures with words in Flashcard

Hi Mike,

First, thanks for a great program! I've been using since 1.0 beta and am excited to see version 2.0 when it comes out.

It just occurred to me that my learning is strengthened when I see characters being used in the real world environment.

For instance, I can more easily remember the character for "stop" (ting) when I've also seen in on a stop sign. I can more easily remember the word for "stand" or a bus stop (zhan) when I see it on the scrolling signs in the bus.

Would it be possible to include small .jpg pictures containing the word and then either display that as a test or a hint (or use in a game) as part of the flashcards?

If the pictures cannot be built into the software, then perhaps the ability for the software to use pictures given to it by the user would be good.

Would others find this helpful or useful as a study aide?

Thanks,
Eric

You know? It sounds great to me, but I'm not sure I'd use this function. Whereas I'd love a picture dictionary--look up the pic of a phone, say, and find out what every part of it is called. Whereas, I'd love that, I don't think I'd use pix with my flashcards because they give away too much info.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't know if it's something we'd have time to implement for 2.0 (which, as is becoming increasingly obvious, is already taking longer than we'd like to finish). However, thanks to the new flashcard storage system in 2.0, it would actually be relatively easy to add a feature like this in the future without a major rewrite; the new flashcard database is fully extensible so we could easily add a field for picture data at some point. The interface would be tricky, but the storage would be fairly easy.
