3.0.0 Bug Report / Feedback Thread

Sometimes when I'm in "Uncategorized" section of my flashcards and tap on any entry, you can see this white line when you tap on an entry. However, I'm not sure how to reproduce it.

Entering 礡 into the search field yields 礴. Is this because XinGothic doesn't have 礡? If so, which font best supports the low frequency characters so that I can properly search GHYCD and HYDCD?

Thanks!

"Why not offer all of them as options" is kind of what got us into our current settings mess, and scoring / card selection is confusing even compared to other problem areas; we need to be extremely cautious about adding any more options there. In fact, much as in 3.0 the tentative plan is to remove a whole lot of settings at first and then maybe add a few back based on user feedback.
KIS! Simplicity is a wonderful thing. Looking forward to seeing this update.

BanMai - that's coming, yes; already licensed the new and much-less-Communist-infused 3rd edition of the dictionary we based PLC on and we'll release it once we finish incorporating the (many many) changes.

golden chyld - we'll check the relevant code at least, the problem seems to be that the text field backgrounds are highlighting but the table cell isn't.

杰超 - actually a bug in the font file; you can go back to STHeiti (Settings / Languages + Text) for now if this particular error is a problem for you, but in general its character set coverage is as comprehensive as any other font we offer. I just dashed off an update to the font's creator demanding a prompt fix. (please let us know if you find any other problems like this)

The handwriting tool doesn't find 徧 which is listed as an alternative to 遍; instead you have to search for 遍. The standard keyboard finds it fine. Sorry if this has been reported previously.

Turn on the options to include very rare characters in Settings / Handwriting Input - that should get it to recognize correctly.

Pronunciation of 落败 sounds weird... "Loi bai" but the sentences are fine. On IPad 3.

Regarding the new Pleco dictionary, I hope you guys can still keep the "pro-Communist" sentences and just add the sentences from the new version. That way, there'll be more sample sentences.

Also for the flashcard app, is it possible to add an option to add the synonyms?

I'm kind of curious about how the "random" cards in the flashcard app are chosen, because a lot of times consecutive cards have some sort of similarity (ie 头头是道 would come after 频频点头)or they would have similar charcaters etc.

On 落败, is this with the system TTS or our add-on one?

Not sure how we'll handle those examples yet, though it does seem wasteful to get rid of them altogether.

We might consider a synonym adding feature once our thesaurus module is more fleshed out, but it's pretty limited now.

Random cards should be purely random - there's no particular bias towards previous words or previous locations in a deck - but there could be a flaw in our shuffling algorithm I suppose; that whole area of the system is about to get re-architected anyway.

I do think displaying intervals is logical, though - useful to a lot of people and a negligible distraction for those who aren't interested in them. We've had one other comment on this, but to be honest flashcards are an area where I'm going to have to be especially stubborn about reversing changes / adding options, because we're about to make a whole lot of much more dramatic changes and it's not really going to be possible for us to provide people with a way to get things working exactly the way they did before. For example, "weighted" / frequency-adjusted is going to go away entirely (a fact we're actually stating explicitly in the 3.0 instruction manual) and we're not bringing it back.

The flashcard system is simply too darn difficult to use right now and yields less-than-satisfactory results for anyone who hasn't gotten thoroughly acquainted with its quirks and intricacies, and it's going to take some fairly radical changes to fix that - even more than in the main dictionary, this is an area where we're in danger of getting eclipsed by a more cleanly-designed competitor unless we're willing to make some tough decisions and tick off a few long-time users for the sake of making our app better for everyone else. The design decisions we made in 2007 based on the technical constraints of *Palm Pilots,* the abilities of the much more primitive flashcard systems of the time, and a desire to maintain some level of similarity / compatibility with our even older (2004!) Palm/WM flashcard app simply aren't something we can be expected to carry forward indefinitely.

I'm hoping that I won't get burned with the flashcard changes. Losing frequency-adjusted is not going to burn me as I never use it, so hopefully it's not going to throw my study routine out of whack. I'm not married to points, but I am using a non-standard 20 points per day so that I can have very long intervals with a progression that mimics old-automatic with aggressiveness of 3. Do you anticipate any issues with this? Are there any other items you're anticipating getting rid of that we might want to be prepared for?

Regarding "points per day," wouldn't you be able to get a similar progression by changing the values in "tweak parameters"? Aside from the inability to set the starting interval, which we'd definitely replace in some other way. Other adjustments to points-per-day we think we can replace by providing easier access to the batch command to adjust all intervals/scores by an arbitrary percentage - the tentative plan is to store intervals as double-precision floating point numbers, so you should be able to keep doing that repeatedly without losing any significant amount of precision.

Yes, mathematically speaking, "points per day" could be completely eliminated from the user options and the only flexibility you lose is the ability to expand the maximum interval to 10240 days from 2048. Any parameters previously expressed as a score could easily be expressed as a time interval. As long as my card intervals are not getting capped, then I don't anticipate getting burned by the updates.

Are there any plans to mimic Anki's behavior of spacing out sibling cards? Currently I review most of my cards in 3 different tests: reading, dictation and expression. I often add them to an "exclude" group after testing them so that I don't test any words in more than one test on any given day. It might be difficult to do this without adding complexity to the flashcard UI, unless you had already planned it.

Great update!!! some bugs that may be already known (sorry if that is the case or if they are not bugs)

1) When using the reader: Some and only some txt files seem to be empty even though I know they are not. I have tried all possible encodings with no success. I send an example file.

2) In IPAD (IOS7) there is no "Transparent" option in the settings/hadwriting input/Background menu.

3) In IPOD touch (4th generation with IOS 6.1.5) there is a "Transparent" option in the settings/hadwriting input/Background menu but I have had some problems: Once in a while (dont know when or why) it does not allow you to access the buttons at the bottom: undo /radical /keyboard so there is no way to change to other input modes apart from hadwritting. It has never happened to me having other backgrounds.

And a feature request if I may :)
for those like me who have txt books along with their mp3 audio, it would be very useful to be able to open an mp3 in the document reader, or to open a txt file in the lyrics reader other that the one embeded in the mp3.

thanks for making learning chinese much easier.

jiacheng - we had already been planning to allow you to juggle multiple scorefiles during the same test, actually; logical thing to do once you're letting people review in multiple directions. Still haven't quite settled on how to make the UI for this easy / straightforward though.

santiago - 1) this file seems to be corrupted; it's GB18030 with a lot of garbage characters and iOS' text encoding converter doesn't know what to do with it. Try saving it as UTF-8 instead.

2) This has actually never been supported - frankly, on all but the newest iPads the performance would be unsatisfactory (too slow).

3) Thanks - we'll see if we can find an answer on this one.

I don't know if there's a good way to access lyrics embedded into standalone MP3 files at the moment - have to check on that. For reading other text files while listening to an MP3, why not simply queue up that MP3 file on the system music player instead of in Pleco?

Notedpad++ opens it in GB2312(simplified) and most of it is readable and fine, but YES you are right, there seems to be some garbage in it which is probably causing the problem. Sorry about that.

Sorry, did not mean embedded, just meant being able to open any MP3 while in the reader mode so you get control of the audio. This would allow using pleco for audiobooks if you have the audio and the txt in separate files. Anyway, maybe that suggestion was a bit unnecesary since you can always load the txt in the itunes lyric section.... but what about an slider to control the position of the audio? (for 40 minutes audiobooks is very helpful) pleeeease. :) by the way thanks for the SEARCH bottom in the reader 非常有用 for audiobooks。

I don't know if this is the right forum, but I have a stupid problem. I have had the old version of pleco on ipad for quite some time, and I'm quite happy with it. Now I have installed the new version of pleco on my ipad. I tried to buy the Hanyu Da Cidian from the new version. I get to the page with buy now/Buy w. edu.. / Download demo. I can download the demo, but if I press the "buy now" button, nothing happens. I could not buy a new font either. Presumably all this has something to do with apple store.

I did try turning the ipad off and on, that did not help.

Any ideas?

jlnr - Thanks! The overcrowded box was an iOS6-only compromise that we thought would be better than removing options (given that we were not willing to take the time to add a custom alert view interface just for the sake of iOS 6).

santiago - you can actually control the position of the audio using the iOS 7 control center, since we're queueing it up on the standard iOS music player - swipe up from the bottom of the screen and then adjust the position to wherever you like.

marcelbdt - might be an iTunes account mismatch; go into the iOS "Settings" app / "Store," tap on your email address, and sign out of your iTunes account, then reboot your iPad (hold down the power button and slide to power off), go back to Settings / Store, and sign back in - does that get purchases working again?
