AnkiDroid: Changing the headword without compromising duplicate checking

I understand that Anki and therefore Pleco use the headword for duplicate checking. I would like to gradually change the headwords into example sentences which obviously makes the checking impossible. I was wondering whether there is a workaround i.e. by adding a separate field for the example. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Thusfar I've only really used simple bi-directional cards so if there is a simple way to convert (preferably within Android) them to circumvent the problem that would be wonderful.

You'd want to add a separate field and re-make your card template to use that field, yes - it's not possible to change the field AnkiDroid uses for duplicate checking. (basically they index whatever the first field in your note type is and that's the only one you can search efficiently)
