How do you learn cantonese ?

I'm anticipating to move to Hong Kong in 6 - 8 month's time. I have been studying Mandarin for the last 6 months just because that's what everyone recommended I should do. I'd like to have a minimal conversational level in cantonese.
What do you guys think:
- should I wait until I move to Hong Kong, where it'll be easier because of the immersion. in the mean time i'l focus on speaking / reading mandarin with simplified characters
- should I start preparing by taking classes now, can anyone recommend cantonese classes in NYC ?

I recommend you get the Pimsleur Canto course, plus some other stuff. The Pimsleur course is not very deep, but since it's audio only it give you a good idea about pronunciation without all unnecessary tone BS. However, since its not very deep (I think 2-300 words only) you need some other stuff too.

I recommend the RTHK Naked Lunch Cantonese broadcasts. Cecilie Gamst Berg is really fun to listen to, and no fun = no learning

Thanks, I just ordered Pimsleur Cantonese, it's a little pricey but for education purposes I don't hesitate to spend!

I also wanted to thank you for the advice! I'm hoping to learn to speak Cantonese as well.

You can also subscribe through iTunes. Cecile is a total rockstar. There's also a very simple audio/ music CD (available on iTunes too) called Rhythmic Cantonese. Really good for a low-stress introduction to the tones in Cantonese and targeting adults' conversation needs. Cantonese spoken and written are quite different. This is spoken.

There are some cute kid story apps on itunes, 'The Little red hen' and 'boy who cried wolf', quite cheap and english/canto & I think spanish. But it's written-Canto and a bit difficult to start with. Cheap. Only those two have Cantonese unfortunately.
